Birthdays, festival, uniforms, and teething!

Life is very busy, and I originally wrote this post 2 weeks ago and never got a chance to post it. So I am posting it now!

This week has been a crazy busy week. Both Daddy and I celebrated our birthdays (we are a day apart in birthdays). I tried really hard to surprise Daddy with a take-out form his favourite Chinese food restaurant, but apparently the people who own that restaurant did not know about my plans and took a 3 week vacation. I was very surprised when I phoned to place an order and the answering machine informed me that the restaurant is closed due to a 3 week holidays that the owners were taking. Sometimes, I wish that people could read my mind!

I did manage to cut out letters for a "Happy Birthday Daddy" sign and I got the kids to colour the letters. We then stuck the letters onto the wall so we could surprise Daddy. I was really hoping to surprise Daddy! Despite it being his birthday he went to work that morning and he had a soccer practice to coach that evening. It was important for him to be there since the team uniforms are in and as a head coach he had a job of distributing them to all the team players.

Since the Chinese food take-out did not pan out I was going to take him out for dinner, but I had to break the surprise to him and tell him to not go anywhere after practice and to hurry home with Funky Monkey. Unfortunately, he had to go and see Grandma and Gramps so he would not be home early enough. We decided that since the following day was my birthday, we would just move the dinner to tomorrow.

The next morning was my birthday. I was surprised my kids adding "and mommy" to the sign we made for daddy. So now the sign read: "Happy Birthday Daddy and Mommy". It was very lovely of them to think of me. And then I got lovely messages all day long with Birthday wishes. Maybe being one year older was not so bad.

But the day was not going to be easy at all. Funky Monkey had his first Festival competition and Daddy had to hand out uniforms for Girly Monkey's soccer team just before that. Let's just say that coaching 2 teams is very busy. He would have to miss the practice that day though, and since I signed up to be Team Manager I tried to coordinate it all for him. It was a great thing that the Assistant coach of the girls' team was willing to take over practice so Daddy, Girly Monkey, and Little Monkey could rush back to the theater to watch Funky Monkey. I and Baby M stayed with Funky Monkey to help out. I had Baby M in an Ergo carrier and he was sleeping. I was glad since I would have to help Funky Monkey and it was much easier if Baby M was sleeping. But that did not last long. As soon as we went down to the dressing rooms Baby M woke up. He started fussing so I changed him, but he was still upset. I think he has got some teeth coming and he is just not sleeping well.

I stayed and talked to a mom of the other boy dancer in Funky Monkey's group for a little while, but then Baby M was getting increasingly upset so I had to go and feed him. Normally, I would go to a room, or bathroom, or even a car to feed him (I am not much for public nursing, not because there is anything wrong with it but simply because I don't feel comfortable doing it in public), but there really wasn't any rooms and Daddy had the car. So I went outside and sat on empty bleachers in the park and fed him there. By the time I came back Funky Monkey was already backstage ready for his first competition. Luckily, the other mom helped him with some make-up touch-ups and he was ready. Daddy and the crew made it just in time to watch him.

I thought that the performance went really well and I think he was happy to have the first time over with. I would have wanted to stay and see some more performances, but we had 7:45pm reservations at a Seafood buffet. I was really hungry and I was hoping to eat some good food. I have been looking forward to it for a while now. The restaurant is part of the same venue that we got married in, so it always brings fond memories of our wedding. I had vision of getting some yummy food and a cup of good coffee. Baby M fell asleep in the car so I was glad that I would get a chance to enjoy my food.

Since I am giving my infant car seat to my cousin who is expecting I am trying to get used to taking Baby M out of the seat as opposed to taking the whole seat from the car. Well, he wouldn't have that at all. Next thing I know, Baby M is staring at me. I tried to bounce him but to no avail. He was up!

Let's just say that the dinner did not go well from then. By the time I got a plate of salads to the table he was fussing, and by the time I ate it he was in full on crying mode. I tried to go out into the hallway and bounce him but he was overtired by now and not happy. I had to leave the building for a while out of courtesy for the other people in the restaurant. Meanwhile, Daddy was doing his best to help all the kids with their food. Eventually, with only 15 minutes left until buffet closed, I finally got my plate of food when Daddy took Baby M from me. I engulfed it and then went with the kids to get some desert. I have really forgotten how hard this baby-teething thing is. But since I have been there 3 times already, I knew that this too shall pass. It might not pass in the next few weeks, but eventually Baby M will sit at a table and eat with us, or at least attempt to.

Best news we got the next day was that Funky Monkey's dance group ended up getting silver medal in the festival! I was so happy with him. He now has medals from football, soccer, and dance! How fun. Someday he can share them with his kids.
